So what kinds of things do people use hypnotherapy for – hypnotherapy to help manage anxiety or stress, hypnosis to lose weight, hypnosis to quit smoking etc. The use of hypnotherapy to help with everyday problems, is becoming more and more common.  Every day I see with my own eyes how hypnotherapy can help people get rid of problems they’ve struggled with for years.  However, there still seems to be lots of rubbish around about what happens in a hypnotherapy session.  The following are comments i’ve come across over the last few years since becoming a hypnotherapist.  I thought I’d just take time today to answer these myths.

1. The Hypnotherapist will take cotrol of your mind

Included in this is “the hypnotherapist will make you cluck like a chicken”.  I can’t even begin to count the number of times I’ve been asked about this.  My usual answer is I haven’t done the chicken course yet.  Stage hypnosis is very different to the kind of hypnotherapy I work with and I NEVER take control of your mind.  It’s just not possible.  Hypnosis is a focused state of relaxation.  You are always in complete control during a hypnosis session and you can stop it at any time you like.

2. You’ll do things you don’t want to do under hypnosis-

Similar to the previous myth, the hypnotherapist can’t make you do anything you don’t want to do.  You are always in control.  This goes for things like quitting smoking when you don’t really want to as well.  Quite often people phone or message to book their loved ones in for hypnotherapy because they are worried about their health.  Unfortunately this probably won’t be successful as the person doing the smoking has to be motivated to stop smoking for their own reasons before it is likely to be successful

3.  Only weak people can be hypnotised-

Almost anybody can be hypnotised and it is generally thought that more intelligent people respond better to hypnosis.  There are times when it is not suitable to hypnotise someone but a good hypnotherapist will go through this with you when you book or during the first session.

4. You can get stuck in hypnosis-

No-one can get stuck in hypnosis as you are always in control.  You can stop the session any time you want and you will be able to walk, talk or do anything else you were able to do before the session. 

5. Children Can’t be hypnotised-

False! Children can have excellent responses as they have such active imaginations. Imagination is the language of the subconscious mind.  Children can be helped by hypnotherapy for the following:


  • Stress and anxiety
  • Fears and phobias
  • Bedwetting
  • Studying/exams
  • Bereavement
  • Sports performance
  • Bullying/relationships
  • Speech difficulties.
