Phobias and Fears
Fear is a natural response caused by real danger. A phobia, on the other hand, is an irrational fear of an object or situation that causes little or no danger. Phobias are linked to our subconscious mind, and because they are irrational, they can often be dealt with effectively. The list of phobias is long and some of them seem very strange (e.g phobia of tomato soup, beans etc.). Often the person knows the phobia is irrational but still struggles to do anything about it. Phobias can be specific (fear of spiders, driving, flying etc. ) or social. Social phobias are when someone feels extreme anxiety and discomfort in social situations.
Causes of Phobia
There are many causes of phobias, including the ones where they’ve learned it from a parent as in the case of seeing their mother run away and be frightened when she saw a wasp. Traumatic experiences and brain chemicals are also believed to influence the development of phobias.
Treatment for Phobia
Hypnotherapy can help to identify the root cause of the phobia and enable individuals to react to the particular object or situation they once feared in a calmer manner when encountering it in the future. Phobias are displaced fears and because they are not rational, they can be dealt with.
Hypnotherapy can also help with relaxation and visualisation techniques for desensitisation and forming new habits such as being more calm and relaxed. Phobias and fears can often be fixed in one or two sessions. Get in touch if you would like to find out more.
